Buildings & Grounds Worker
Posted: 06/29/2025This is full-time employment in skilled work of moderate complexity in public works.
Work involves performing a wide variety of manual, automotive and equipment
operation tasks involved in municipal right of way, public infrastructure maintenance and
building and grounds maintenance. Applicants should have experience operating heavy
machinery, performing routine maintenance and repairs of facilities and working in all
weather conditions. This position will also be responsible for sidewalk plowing through
the winter months.
This position is part of a bargaining unit with a salary range of $22.31-$27.32 depending
on background and level of experience

Overview
This is skilled work of moderate complexity in Department of Public Works. Work
involves performing a wide variety of project-based tasks and general building and
grounds maintenance at the direction of the DPW Ops director.
Work is performed in accordance with established routines and procedures, with
employee making independent decisions in coordination with the DPW. Employee may
exercise a lead responsibility over other employees in a collaborative manner to
complete projects. Direct supervision is received from a superior. Work typically
originates from either assignment from a supervisor or due to normal operations
involved in buildings and grounds maintenance. Work is reviewed by periodic
inspection and evaluation of work in progress or upon completion.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist with Operation & maintenance of Town pool. May include indirect contact
with chemicals such as liquid chlorine and CO2.
• Performs minor building maintenance
• Tree and lawn care maintenance including raking, pruning, mowing, sweeping,
shoveling, chipping, etc.
•Operates heavy equipment, mowers, machinery and similar automotive
equipment.
• Performs light maintenance to assigned equipment, checks equipment to make
sure all safety mechanisms are in proper operating condition, reports operating
defects to Automotive Mechanics or immediate supervisor.
• Operates various hand and power tools.
• Assist highway, water and sewer departments as needed.
• Performs related work as required.
• Ensuring work is compliant with all local, state and federal laws.
• Sidewalk snow removal and assistance with Highway division throughout the winter season
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
• Graduation from a standard senior or vocational high school.
• Current Vermont Driver’s License
• Knowledgeable about routine maintenance of baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis
courts, basketball courts, nature trail, parks, and general lawn care.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of building and facility maintenance.
• Recognize and perform high standard of customer service to patrons, ability to give
assistance to patrons, when necessary, take public service role seriously and
perform duties to a high standard of public acceptance
• Considerable skill in the operation of equipment. Ability to Operate assigned
equipment safely and efficiently.
• Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.

Working Environment and Physical Activities
Frequently requires bending and stooping; work on uneven ground; lifting and carrying of
objects over 50 lbs; use of both feet for repetitive movements such as operating foot
controls; and use of both hands for repetitive movements such as grasping of hand
controls, handles, tools, etc.; exposure to moving equipment and machinery; working
outdoors in all seasons with marked changes in climate conditions; and exposure to dust,
fumes and gases
Occasionally requires squatting; climbing stairs/ladders; reaching above the shoulder
level; crouching; kneeling; balancing; and carrying and lifting objects up to 50 lbs.
Operation of machinery and equipment required to perform the duties of the position.
