    At Vermont Gas Systems (VGS), we do important work. We deliver safe, reliable, and affordable thermal energy services to over 56,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. The Field Service Manager is an entrepreneurial leader who runs and grows the daily operations of our Field Services team; keeping our natural gas and hybrid energy services (natural gas, renewable natural gas, and electrified equipment) exceptional for customers while driving new revenue streams. This role involves overseeing a technical team with changing priorities and an evolving strategic context, maintaining team motivation, and promoting collaboration, accountability, and engagement. 

    The Field Service Manager excels at Lean methodology: maximizes customer value while minimizes waste in processes, and brings an innovative mindset to expand our suite of thermal products and services, including electrical equipment and service, to complement our natural gas and RNG offerings, open new service areas, and seize market opportunities. They will also work closely with New Product Development to bring new solutions to market, all while ensuring regulatory compliance and safety in a regulated utility environment.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION:

    • Lead and inspire a skilled field team in installation, maintenance, and repair of utility facilities, customer gas systems, and hybrid/electrical thermal equipment.
    • Maintain high team morale and performance in a fast-changing, dynamic environment.
    • Drive safety, efficiency, customer satisfaction, and revenue growth while meeting budget, performance, and compliance targets.
    • Collaborate with the New Product Development team to pilot, implement, and scale new products and services.
    • Develop and launch thermal offerings, including electrical products, installation, and maintenance services, to broaden our market presence and meet evolving customer needs.
    • Apply Lean management principles to streamline operations, boost productivity, and accelerate growth.
    • Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company and industry safety standards.
    • Build strong partnerships with contractors, trade allies, and internal teams to enhance service quality and expand our product and service portfolio.
    • Communicate effectively both internally across teams and externally with customers, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
    • Oversee training, compliance programs, and performance to meet industry and regulatory requirements.
    • Represent the company in emergencies, customer escalations, and industry/community events.
    • Provide Dispatch coverage when other options are unavailable.
    REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE:
    • Strong leadership skills with a track record of motivating teams in dynamic, evolving environments.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset with experience growing revenue and scaling operations.
    • Prior experience developing new initiatives by supporting the launch of innovative solutions.
    • Experience working in the heating and cooling industry and complementary services.
    • Ability to make difficult decisions that may impact direct reports.
    • Increase customer value and cut waste through process improvement and efficient resource use.
    • Deep knowledge of regulatory compliance in a natural gas utility environment.
    • Experience leading technical field service teams (union + non-union a plus).
    • Strong budgeting, business development, and operational planning skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, internally and externally, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders.
    • Ability to solve problems quickly, adapt to change, and maintain a calm presence under pressure.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS:

    This is a safety-sensitive role (drug/alcohol testing per 49 CFR–Section 199) with occasional field work in all kinds of weather, sometimes lifting up to 50 lbs., and responding to urgent issues as needed.

    Salary Range:
    $100,000.00 To $125,000.00 Annually
