    At Vermont Gas Systems, we do important work. We ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services to over 55,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. An Initial Locator plays an important role by ensuring the safety and integrity of the VGS gas system. They are responsible for learning methods and procedures to perform gas facility locating work. They work under the supervision of experienced Locators.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION:

    • Becomes familiar with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) policies, procedures, record keeping, compliance tracking, follows safe working practices and compliance, operational and safety procedures.
    • Learns to safely operate simple facility locating equipment, including but not limited to single frequency locators & metal detectors.
    • Becomes familiar with VGS record drawings such as As-Builts and service cards or other records.
    • Learns techniques used to identify facilities such as locator boxes, valve boxes, steel risers, and PE risers.
    • Learns to recognize hazardous situations.
    • Learns how to document work and maintain appropriate records.
    • Acquires basic knowledge of the State of Vermont Digsafe Laws.
    • Learns to use various forms of technology to perform their work such as but not limited to GIS, GPS, Work Order Management and Ticketing software and more.
    • Follows procedures for safely working around natural gas pipelines and other utilities.
    • Attends all required trainings, such as safety, compliance and monthly team meetings.
    • Strives to obtain appropriate Operator Qualifications.
    • Strives to obtain Natural Gas Certification.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE:
    • Working knowledge of the principles of gas behavior, practices, and standards preferable.
    • Ability to learn industry safety regulations including Vermont State Digsafe Laws.
    • Ability to acquire knowledge of applicable codes and regulations to perform the work safely.
    • Strong attention to detail a must.
    • Experience in troubleshooting and investigating a wide variety of situations.
    • Works well within a team environment to accomplish goals.
    • Must be comfortable using technology, such as tablets and smartphones as well as applicable software to complete job duties.
    • Unrestricted automobile operator’s license.
    • High school diploma or GED. Vocational training preferred.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS:
    • This position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.
    • Must be able to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.
    • Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping and reaching is required on a daily basis.
    • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required for specific job duties

    Salary Range:
    $29.60 To $29.60 Hourly
