Town Hall Theater, Inc.
Performing Arts & FilmMeetingsNon-Profit & Civic Organizations
In 1883 the people of Middlebury erected a magnificent building on the town green to house town offices and the town hall. The hall, a 600-seat theater, was the center of Middlebury's social and cultural life for 75 years. The building was sold to private interests in the 1960's and almost every trace of the original interior was obliterated. An energetic and dedicated group of residents created Town Hall Theater, Inc., in 1997, with the goal of purchasing the building, restoring the exterior to its original glory, and constructing within the shell a new, state-of-the-art performance hall and other community meeting rooms.
After extensive fundraising, historic restoration where possible and renovation where appropriate, the building was re-opened on July 26, 2008 to great fanfare! This past year over 180 events were held in the intimate Erie Volkert Main Stage Theater seating 232, the Jackson Gallery, and the Byers Studio. Events included plays and musicals, dance and acting classes for children and adults, Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre of Great Britain live HD broadcasts, benefits for area non-profits, wedding receptions, and annual meetings and holiday celebrations for local businesses. Middlebury's Town Meeting is once again held in its original location. The Town Hall Theater is once again a meeting place for all of Middlebury's residents, strengthening and enriching the life of our community.
