About Us
Located within walking distance of the picturesque village of Castleton, Applewood Manor Bed & Breakfast offers elegant accommodation and rich history. Built by Noah Hoit in 1789 with the spacious colonial front being added in 1803, the house has been lovingly restored and stylishly decorated. An interesting selection of antiques is displayed throughout the house. The owners, Ralph and Nancy (along with their golden retriever, Samson, and cat, "Queen" Sophie), extend friendly hospitality and excellent personal service.
The five beautifully-appointed guestrooms have sumptuous beds, private bathrooms, sitting areas, and air-conditioning. The room rates (including breakfast) offer great value for money and range from $80 to $130 (plus 9% meals & rooms tax) depending on the room selected and the season. Delicious breakfast are served in the charming dining-room where, in winter, a cheery fire burns in the original brick fireplace. Great conversations and lots of laughter occur around the antique communal table. The peaceful library has stacked shelves of books to borrow, a gas fire, and overstuffed comfy chairs. Wireless internet connection is available throughout the house.
In winter months, guests like to chat, watch satellite TV or a DVD in front of the marble fireplace in the elegant guest lounge. In warmer months, guests enjoy relaxing on the screened porch and patio, or taking a refreshing dip in the outdoor swimming pool. Surrounding the house are spacious lawns and 33 acres with woodland walks, a trout river, and fields, presenting a charming rural setting for a small event such as an anniversary party, family or school reunion, or wedding.
Throughout the year, Applewood Manor makes a great home base for lots of activities and is convenient for Middlebury, Castleton, and Green Mountain Colleges. The scenery is always lovely with peak Fall being early October. A plethora of galleries, museums, antique stores, bookshops, and fabulous shopping is accessible within an hour. In the colder mongths, outdoor enthusiasts bring snowshoes, cross-country skis, or snowmobiles to access the VAST system directly from the property, while down-hill skiers take and easy 40-minute trip to the slopes of Killington or Okemo. During summer and fall, guests like to hike on the Long Trail or other local trails, visit historic sites such as Hubbardton Battlefield and Fort Ticonderoga, or go biking. Lake Bomoseen and other small lakes are close-by for swimming, kayaking, fishing, and boating, and horseback-riding is available locally at Pond Hill Ranch where hundreds of folk have fun at the pro-rodeo every summer Saturday night.
