Shelter Manager
Posted: 09/14/2025The Shelter Manager is a member of the administrative leadership team and is responsible for the efficient and smooth day-to-day operations of the animal shelter, including intake and adoption center initiatives related to the shelter’s mission. The position includes administrative and supervisory duties in addition to budget oversight of shelter operations.KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:- Work under the direction of the Executive Director as a member of the administrative team with a focus on shelter operations and mission.
- Provide direct supervision of the shelter operations team including animal care, animal care coordinators, reception, adoption and direct animal care contracted staff.
- Lead staff recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of shelter staff, including scheduling of shelter staff to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained.
- Support adoption center staff as needed ensuring adherence to policies and practices.
- Maintain inventory and order shelter supplies, including shelter food, in collaboration with the Office Manager.
- Develop and provide diligent oversight of the shelter budget, working with the Office Manager and Executive Director to maintain a healthy and balanced shelter budget.
- Help establish and enforce operations protocols based on industry best practices, making sure to communicate to staff in a clear and consistent manner.
- Maintain written adoption, program, and staffing protocols in collaboration with administrative team.
- Coordinate the publicity of adoptable dogs, cats and small animals, delegating related tasks to appropriate staff.
- Work with animal care coordinators to facilitate regular Animal Transports, working with reputable non-profit shelters and agencies to do so safely.
- Manage seasonal Trap-Neuter-Return program with the volunteer TNR coordinator and Community Medical Program Coordinator, taking care to correctly manage financial resources and stay within budget.
- Support and guide surrender prevention programs in collaboration with all internal and external partners.
- Work with administration to deliver employee assessments, evaluations, hiring and disciplinary action.
- Maintain the safety and security of staff including proper training and handling of animals, ensure that updated safety protocols are enforced, and adequate training is offered.
- Visually inspects public and visitor areas, and animal living areas, to ensure cleanliness, proper cleaning protocols are maintained, and all shelter areas remain organized and tidy.
- Provide support for customer service issues as needed.
- Fill in on the floor in animal care or reception when staffing is short.
- Be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed. Availability for questions and calls off hours as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:- REQUIRED: 3+ years experience managing an animal welfare organization or shelter operations preferably in a non-profit work environment.
- REQUIRED: 4+ years professional experience managing a diverse staff.
- Strong understanding of current employment policies and procedures, staff scheduling, and related human resource skillset.
- Comfort level in financial management, including budget development and oversight.
- Experience implementing a culture of positive customer service.
- Sound judgement and the ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information.
- Computer literacy and data manipulation experience in Microsoft Office Suites (MS 365), database management (Excel, ShelterLuv, Clinic HQ, or similar); and familiarity with web content management tools like Word Press or similar.
- Working knowledge and comfort level working with a diverse array of domestic animals and knowledge of the health and behavioral challenges shelter animals often exhibit.
- Ability to work with empathy in an emotional environment where positive leadership and compassion for animals and people is essential.
- Desire to work collaboratively in a complex non-profit landscape focused on animal welfare and community service.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:A combination of relevant education/certification and experience will be considered. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, non-profit management, and/or animal science, with 2-years experience; or Associate’s degree with at least 4-years of managerial experience preferably in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or similar environment.
