Working with a board of directors offers unique opportunities and challenges. With that in mind, Rob Carter of the Addison County Chamber, Helena Van Voorst of United Way of Addison County and Sarah Audet of Dinners With Love have teamed up to offer a seminar on Working with Boards.
This seminar will also be part mixer, to provide the opportunity for non-profit executives to meet and talk about their respective organizations and the challenges they face.
Goals for the Seminar/Mixer:- Share success stories and lessons learned
- Provide the opportunity to ask questions
- Share resources
- Determine participants’ other training needs/interests
- Encourage peer exchange/support among participants
Topics to be Covered:
- Board roles vs Director roles
- Board member recruitment (age, diversity, etc.)
- How to deal with challenging Board members
- Board engagement (in fundraising and other things)
Seminar is facilitated by Helena Van Voorst, UWAC (ED) - Helena Van Voorst is the Executive Director of United Way of Addison County and has been working with nonprofit boards for 17 years. As a long-time fundraiser, Helena has asked many volunteers to try things outside of their comfort zone - like ask for money - with varying levels of success. Using lessons learned and her own experience serving on local boards, Helena advises local nonprofit staff working through Board-related challenges and strives to engage UWAC's Board of Directors in ways that are meaningful both for the individual volunteers and the community at large. Helena earned her B.A. in Communication from Dordt College and her M.A. in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University.
Sarah Audet, Dinners With Love (ED) + CSAC Board - Sarah joined Dinners With Love in May 2015. Abby Blum, United Way of Addison County Board - Abby Blum lives in Vergennes and is a Senior Development Officer for Middlebury College. Abby has served on the United Way of Addison County’s Board of Directors since 2015 and has just started her term as Vice Chair. When she is not volunteering or working, Abby can be found hiking and skiing in the Green Mountains and teaching barre classes at Middlebury Fitness.
Susan Evans McClure, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (ED) - Susan Evans McClure leads the talented team of educators, curators, museum professionals, and archaeologists as they explore the relationship between the land, the people, and the water of the Champlain Valley.
