Buildings are the greatest source of energy consumption and greenhouse emissions in the world. The materials we use to create our buildings and the energy we consume to operate them take a tremendous toll on the environment. Approximately 76 percent of all electricity generated by power plants goes toward construction and operation of buildings. Buildings also account for an estimated 48 percent of all greenhouse emissions, compared to 27 percent for transportation and 25 percent for industry. Planners, Designers, Builders, and Building Owners are all in effective positions to deliver sustainable building solutions. This is because design-builders often have multiple disciplines working as a team on a project from the onset. This team is, therefore, in a position to consider alternative design and building strategies and look for creative, cost-effective ways to include them in your projects. This program is designed to help business owners and managers, municipal governments, and other people who are involved in the planning of non-residential building projects understand the value of sustainable design-build and the key steps involved in such project planning. The program will be presented by Chris Huston, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP and Andrea Murray, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP of Bread Loaf Architects, Planners, Builders in Middlebury.
