In the summer of 1950 the Pikes Falls neighborhood in Jamaica, VT, was home to a diverse range of residents: long-time local families had been joined by well-known activists Scott and Helen Nearing as well as a group of younger couples who were committed to such ideals as pacifism, self-sufficiency and communitarianism. Rebecca Lepkoff's photographs paired with interviews by the Vermont Folklife Center capture their efforts to explore alternative visions for American society.
