Multiple venues around town feature everything from running races, crafters and vendors, to antique vehicles
Vergennes, Vermont – August 7, 2012 – Vergennes Day celebrates its 31st year on Saturday, August 25, 2012. On the Friday evening before, the event kicks off with a street dance in City Park featuring the music of “Panton Flats” from 7 to 10 p.m. Vergennes Day, hosted and sponsored by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and area businesses, is a celebration of city and community and can be enjoyed by all ages. Activities on Saturday, August 25th take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Vergennes Fire Station from 7 to 10:30 a.m. At 9 a.m. the Little City 5K and 10K races and walk will start in front of the Vergennes Opera House. Join or cheer on several hundred runners and walkers as they race through the streets of Vergennes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. from Stevens House on the corner of Main and N. Green Streets. The bandstand in City Park will be occupied throughout the day by several musical groups: Vergennes City Band at 10 a.m.; The Benoits at 11:15 a.m., The Would I’s at 1:15 p.m., and LC Jazz at 2:30 pm. City Park is also the site of more than 75 crafters’ and vendors’ booths offering fine handcrafts, locally made products, food and more.
For youngsters the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Safe Kids Addison County will be at Bixby Library during its annual book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to inspect and fit a limited supply of bike helmets. At the Vergennes Fire Department, kids will enjoy the ever-popular Bubble Pit from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Bixby Library will hold its “Books for Bikes” drawing which has been sponsored by Bixby, Vergennes Rotary and Safe Kids Addison County.
Vergennes Union High School is the site of the car, tractor, truck and engine show. See this nostalgic display (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; awards at 3 p.m.) and vote for your favorite! VUHS will also host the Champlain Valley Flyers, flying radio-controlled airplanes which will run between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
The Lions will be selling barbequed chicken in City Park starting at 1 p.m. ($12 half chicken, $9 quarter chicken). The Rotary’s Rubber Duckie Race at 3:30 p.m. is a tradition at the Basin! Don’t forget to purchase your tickets at the Rotary’s booth in City Park.
In celebration of their 100th anniversary, Green Mountain Power will be offering free hydro plant tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Also, many of the area’s merchants will be offering sales and specials.
