2012’s Middlebury’s Half Marathon and Relay Another Big SuccessBy
Nearly 800 runners and $6,500 donated to local and national charities
Middlebury, Vermont – June 26, 2012 – The fourth edition of the “Middlebury Maple Run – The Sweetest Half” took place on Sunday, May 6th. A total of 778 runners registered with 504 runners completing the full 13.1 mile distance and 61 two-person teams finishing the relay*. The tally of runners also included 156 student athletes and 12 student relay teams. Runners traveled from 23 different states other than Vermont, comprising 37% of the field.
The race was run on a slightly different course than previous years because of ongoing renovations to the Pulp Mill Covered Bridge. As a result all of this year’s winners set new course records. (Both courses are accurately measured to 13.1 miles, but differences in elevation changes, number of turns, etc. can affect finishing times.) The 2012 winners were:
- Male open (39 and under): Taylor Sundali, a Middlebury College (’12) student, 1:14:23 (5:41 per mile)
- Female open (39 and under): Sara Tuff Dunn, Shelburne, 1:24:08 (6:26 per mile)
- Male master (40+): Scott Reiss, New Haven, 1:26:16 (6:35 per mile)
- Female master (40+): Robin Asbury, Andover, NH, 1:39:26 (7:36 per mile)
This year’s race was also successful in terms of its proceeds and monies donated to several worthwhile charities. A total of $6,500 will be distributed among one national charity—the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and several Addison County-based charities—H.O.P.E., Addison County Humane Society, Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, and Girls on the Run. Two other organizations, the Middlebury Police Department and the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association were recognized by the race for their support in making it a successful and safe event.
“The Addison County Humane Society is extremely grateful to the Middlebury Maple Run for having named us as one of the beneficiaries to this year’s event,” said Jackie Rose, executive director. “We are incredibly touched by the generosity of this group and their commitment to helping us take care of our furry friends. The funding provided from this event will help us to care for over 150 animals at our shelter who are awaiting their forever homes. Thank you to all who participated in the run and to the wonderful folks at the Middlebury Maple Run….thank you for caring for the animals!”
Race organizers have tentatively set a race date of Sunday, May 5, 2013 for next year’s race.
