New Art Gallery to Open in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow Alley

By Sue Hoxie

Eponymously-Named Steven Jupiter Gallery Features Photography & Watercolors

Middlebury, Vermont – March 5, 2015 - Steven Jupiter is pleased to announce the opening of his new gallery, named the Steven Jupiter Gallery, on April 3, 2015, with an opening reception to be held on May 8. Located at 4 Frog Hollow Alley in Middlebury, the gallery will showcase Steven’s work in photography and watercolor. The Steven Jupiter Gallery is a new member of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce.

Steven comes to Middlebury from New York City, by way of Hubbardton, Vermont, where he shares a home with his partner, David, and their dog, Louie. The son of an artist, Steven studied painting and drawing at l’Ecole Normale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and has shown his work in various venues in New York, including Artists Space and the Art Expo. He was also accepted into the Artist Registry at The Drawing Center in New York.

“My work is eclectic. My goal is to provide a unique visual experience, whether through my personal interpretation of the local landscape or through the vibrant colors of my abstract watercolor work,” says Steven.

The gallery’s first show will be Hubbardton Creek, a limited-edition series of ten large color photographs of the waterways that run through the woods in Hubbardton.  Rather than focus on the sweeping vistas that often preoccupy landscape photographers, Hubbardton Creek aims to create a composite portrait of the land by highlighting the beauty of its most minute features.  “Like one might bask in the details of a loved one’s face,” Steven continued.

“In taking the photos in Hubbardton Creek, I imposed several constraints on myself. I did not use post-processing or digital manipulation of any kind. I did not crop the images, and I did not alter or adjust the landscape in any way.  The goal was to present an honest depiction of the land and force myself to search hard for the most aesthetically compelling images.”

Hubbardton Creek and Steven’s other work can be seen on the gallery’s website:  Hubbardton Creek will run in the gallery’s main exhibition space through the end of July.
