French Heritage Day, July 12th, educates and entertains attendees about Vergennes’ French Canadian Heritage

Middlebury, Vermont – May 27, 2014 – The Addison County Chamber of Commerce recently received a $2,000 grant from the Vermont Community Foundation’s Small and Inspiring Grant program. The grant will support the 9th annual French Heritage Day by providing additional funding to host musicians who play authentic French and French-Canadian music. French Heritage Day is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Vergennes.

“We are very appreciative of the support of the Vermont Community Foundation. It enables us to continue to offer this wonderful and truly indigenous event,” according to Andy Mayer, president, Addison County Chamber of Commerce

French Heritage Day educates young and old alike and increases their awareness of the region’s rich cultural heritage, which at one time was 33 percent French, and how this impacted the face of Vergennes and the surrounding area. The Vermont French Canadian Genealogical Society encourages attendees to look into their heritage by offering to trace their roots and attendees learn more about the history of Vergennes with the Vergennes History Club. There are interactive exhibits and demonstrations, as well as re-enactors portraying the Comte de Vergennes, Samuel de Champlain, and other historical figures. There will be hands-on games, children’s activities, and horse drawn wagon rides.

All of these activities will take place amidst a backdrop of French Canadian music featuring acts from both Vermont and Quebec such as Deja-Nous, Voulez-vous Danser, Va-et-Vient, and Gitane Gypsy.

The full schedule of activities will be announced in early June and will be available from the event’s website at www.FrenchHeritageDay.com. This event is free for all attendees.
