New Ophthalmology Practice Opens in Middlebury, Vermont

Middlebury, Vermont – September 8, 2008 – The Addison County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome a new ophthalmology practice to Middlebury. Lisa Pippa Alexander, M.D., PLC, held a grand opening reception and ribbon cutting ceremony on August 26th at her business located at 76 Court Street, Middlebury.

Dr. Alexander and her family relocated to Middlebury from New York in early 2008. She was previously employed as an attending doctor at a clinic in Chinatown. Increases in paperwork and decreasing staff made the job less satisfying over time.  This, coupled with a challenging commute, led to Dr. Alexander's thoughts of relocating.

Dr. Alexander is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1997. She holds an M.D. degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn as well as a BFA in painting from SUNY Purchase. Alexander chose ophthalmology because she values vision for the spiritual place it has filled in her as well as for its practical importance. She also enjoys the related fields of neuroscience and endocrinology, which gives her a fuller appreciation of patients’ medically-related conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and Parkinson's disease.

As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Alexander gets to know entire families, because the most significant eye diseases occur at the age extremes of life (from "lazy eye" which is best diagnosed early in childhood when it can still be treated, to glaucoma which increases in incidence with age), and there is plenty of need to help people see with glasses or contacts at all ages. Eye discomfort is especially common as we approach middle age and experience burning and tearing.  Allergies, pink eyes and lid lesions are common at all ages.

Dr. Alexander’s practice includes diagnosing and medically treating eye disorders, cooperating with primary doctors in monitoring their patients with medical diseases that have related eye problems and those whose medicines require monitoring by an eye professional.  In addition, she checks for refractive errors and writes prescriptions for glasses and orders contact lenses.

Currently, the practice is open to see patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  She is an ophthalmology attending for Fletcher Allen Health Care on Mondays, Fridays and alternate Wednesdays, and plans to open on some Saturday mornings in the near future.
