Crown Point/Lake Champlain Bridge Updates

Below is information and a list of transportation options and resources for getting to/from Vermont/New York while the Crown Point/Lake Champlain Bridge is closed for repairs.

6/11/10: Groundbreaking ceremony to be held on the New York side at 10:30 a.m. Vermont Governor Douglas, VTrans Secretary David Dill and Vermont State Rep. Diane Lanpher. Both New York Governor Patterson and Acting NYSDOT Commissioner Stan Gee will also be on hand to speak.

4/8/10: View progress on bridge reconstruction via 511NY's Webcams. Click on this link, and follow these instructions:

  • On the Traffic Conditions page in the Map Legend activate the checkbox for cameras. Camera locations appear on the map. 
  • Locate the camera symbol on the map near Lake Champlain, which is tagged "Crown Point", and click on it.  This will zoom the map into the temporary ferry location and display two separate camera icons, one for the "Access Road to Crown Point Temporary Ferry" and the other "Crown Point Temporary Ferry". 
  • Click on these icons to display the most recent image from the cameras.

2/26/10: Transportation services provided by ACTR and Adirondack Trailways will be discontinued as end of business on Friday, February 26th.

12/18/09:  Demolition of the bridge has been set for 10 AM on Wednesday, December 23rd.

12/17/09: The Fort Ti Ferry has closed today because of ice conditions. They hope to open again on 12/18--weather permitting. Check their website for more details.

Public Transporation

ACTR's "Dial-a-Ride" service provides transportation for New York pedestrian commuters traveling via ferry OR an Adirondack Trailways bus. Call 24 hours in advance and ACTR will provide transportation to your workplace in Addison County. Read the details.

ACTR guarantees ride home for New York residents communting to/from Addison County. Read the details.


Crown Point Temporary Ferry
Connecting Addison, Vermont and Crown Point, New York
Service begins Monday, February 1st

  • 24-hour service
  • Ferry departs Vermont on the hour and half-hour
  • Ferry departs New York on the quarter-hours
  • Crossing takes approximately 15 minutes
  • 50-car capacity
  • Enclosed space for pedestrian travelers


Adirondack Trailways Express Bus Service
Connecting Port Henry, Ticonderoga to Middlebury and Vergennes (via Whitehall)

As of 2/26/10 Adirondack Trailways has discontinued this service.

As of 11/13/09 CCTA will discontinue its service from the Charlotte dock to Shelburne & Fletcher Allen Healthcare (low ridership). If a commuter needs public transportation services from Charlotte to points north, they should contact Special Service Transportation Agency at 802-878-1527 one day in advance.

  • Crossing takes approximately 20 minutes
  • Departures every 30 minutes
  • FREE as of 10/27/09
  • Commuters needing to travel south of Charlotte should contact ACTR at 388-1946


Basin Harbor Ferry

As of 12/8/09 the Basin Harbor Ferry has discontinued service due to high water levels.

Private Transportation 

New Yorkers: Sign up for Essex County Ride Share (available to residents of both New York and Vermont)

Vermonters:

VTrans has a toll-free 800 number and website to help commuters connect for carpooling purposes.

The phone numbers are 1-800-685-7433 (RIDE) or 1-802-828-6521.

The web site is www.connectingcommuters.org.

At the moment, there is a person processing registrants looking to make carpool connections.  Potential carpool matches are sent to registrants by email and/or regular mail (as preferred).  Within a week, an automated software system is expected to go live, which should help expand the capabilities of the system.
